MGM
Social Design

‘19-’20

Art direction and design lead for a social redesign of MGM Studios. MGM Studios is an American media company specializing in film and television production and distribution based in Beverly Hills, California. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was founded on April 17, 1924. MGM studios is now owned by the Amazon MGM Studios subsidiary of Amazon since 2022.

During the this project, we researched the full archive, and catalogue of MGM Studios, and created a visual identity that blended both editorial design, and a flexible color palette. The key color was pulled from the still, or key art of a particular film. MGM studios wanted to re-establish itself as a film studio pioneer, through a visual language that encorporated their rich history.

The overall visual design took inspiration from Twen. Twen (short for ″twenty″) was a magazine for the first generation of post—war teens and young adults. It was a wild conglomeration of the controversial ideas and blooming freedoms of the 1960’s.

“A big part of the impact came from Willy Fleckhaus’ design: a 12-column modular grid with already familiar blown-up headlines set in Schmalfette Grotesk; psychedelic illustrations; extremely tightly cropped or enlarged black-and-white photos, and, of course, a lot of white space perfectly arranged on the page.”—readymag
